The Science of Sound: Why I Use Specific Frequencies in Healing Recordings and Group Meditations
Sound is more than something we hear.
The rhythm, pace, tone, vibration, and space between sounds can influence how we breathe, how alert or relaxed we feel, and how easily we settle into a meditative state. That is why the sound in my ILIT healing recordings and live group meditations is never chosen randomly.
I use sound intentionally to support relaxation, focus, nervous-system regulation, and the deeper therapeutic work happening throughout the experience.
Your Body Responds to Sound
Think about how differently your body reacts to a sudden alarm compared with gentle music.
Sound enters through the auditory system, but our response to it involves much more than the ears. Music and sound can interact with brain regions involved in emotion, attention, memory, breathing, and autonomic nervous system activity.
Research has found that music can influence physiological measures such as heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and heart-rate variability. Slower, calmer music in particular has been associated with shifts toward a more relaxed physiological state.
That connection between sound and the nervous system is one reason I pay close attention to what someone is hearing during a therapeutic recording.

Why I Choose Specific Sounds and Frequencies
You may hear different tones, ambient sounds, gentle rhythmic patterns, singing bowls, or layered frequencies in my recordings and live experiences.
I do not choose them because I believe one magical frequency can “heal everything.”
The science is more nuanced than that.
I choose sound based on the state I want to help create.
Some sections may use slower, softer sounds to encourage the body to settle. Others may create a feeling of spaciousness, grounding, focus, or emotional movement. The sound supports the words, breathing, visualization, and hypnotic process rather than replacing them.
In other words, the frequency is part of the environment for change—not a magic cure by itself.

Sound Can Help the Nervous System Slow Down
When we are stressed, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state even when there is no immediate danger.
Breathing may become shallow. Muscles tighten. Thoughts speed up. The body prepares to respond.
Calmer sound environments may help interrupt that pattern.
Studies examining music and the autonomic nervous system suggest that certain types of music can affect heart-rate variability and parasympathetic activity—the systems associated with rest, recovery, and regulation—although researchers also note that more high-quality studies are needed.
This is exactly why I combine sound with slow breathing, meditation, hypnosis, visualization, and subconscious work.
Each element reinforces the others.
What About Binaural Beats?
Some therapeutic audio experiences also use binaural beats.
A binaural beat occurs when slightly different tones are presented separately to each ear through headphones. The brain perceives an additional rhythmic difference between the two tones.
Research into binaural beats is still developing. Recent systematic reviews suggest they may have potential for reducing anxiety and supporting certain cognitive or relaxation outcomes, but results vary considerably between studies.
That means I view them as a supportive tool—not something that should be marketed as a guaranteed neurological shortcut.
Why Live Sound Feels Different
During ILIT group meditations and sound-healing experiences, I may also work with crystal singing bowls and other resonant instruments.
Live sound creates something a recording cannot completely reproduce.
You hear the tone, but you also experience the resonance moving through the room. Different frequencies overlap. The sound grows, fades, and changes depending on where you are sitting and how the instruments interact with the space.
For many people, that sensory environment makes it easier to stop analyzing and simply experience the moment.
And that matters.
When the mind becomes quieter and the body feels safer and more settled, people may become more receptive to meditation, visualization, reflection, and therapeutic suggestion.
Sound Supports the Work—It Is Not the Work
One important distinction I make at ILIT is that sound itself is not the entire healing process.
Sound is one layer.
The deeper experience may also include:
guided hypnosis or meditation
subconscious pattern work
intentional breathing
visualization
nervous-system regulation
therapeutic language and suggestion
repetition and integration
The sound helps create the internal conditions in which those techniques can become more effective.
Why Every Recording Is Different
A recording designed for sleep should not necessarily feel the same as one created for confidence, emotional regulation, anxiety, or motivation.
That is why I think about the emotional objective of the recording before choosing the soundscape.
For sleep, I may want the sound to become progressively softer and less stimulating.
For anxiety or nervous-system regulation, I may emphasize steadiness, predictability, and spaciousness.
For confidence or motivation, the experience may gradually become more expansive and energizing.
The sound follows the therapeutic intention.
Healing Is Not About Forcing the Mind to Change
One of the principles behind ILIT is that meaningful change does not always come from pushing harder.
Sometimes the nervous system needs enough safety and stillness for the mind to become receptive to something new.
Sound can help create that space.
It can slow the experience down.
It can give the mind somewhere to rest.
And when combined thoughtfully with hypnotherapy, meditation, breathing, and subconscious work, it can become a powerful part of the overall therapeutic environment.
That is why I use sound so intentionally in both my personalized healing recordings and ILIT live group experiences.
The goal is not simply to hear something beautiful.
The goal is to create an experience that helps the mind and body become more receptive to calm, clarity, and meaningful change.
